Miss Lord wears a smart 2-piece day suit with a fitted jacket falling to her hips, and a pencil skirt with front pleat, falling to just below her knee. The suit is cut in a fashion that makes the stripes accentuate her figure in the loveliest way. This time she has paired it with a beige long sleeved silk shirt underneath. Her shoes are of "suede" and are closed toe slingback heels. She carries a matching purse made of brown satin with gold trim and blue beads for a handle.
Her hat perfectly matches her purse as it is made of the same material and adorned with the same trim. It also has decoration of blue beads on top, blue hat pins, and multiple short multicolored feathers in the back. Of course, she wears nude hosiery, and to finish her look, she wears a "gold" chain necklace with a blue "topaz" pendant with matching stud earrings. Original design by renowned designer Jose Ferrand, circa 1940.Nobody could top Madra Lord when it came to fast. Talking dames with a hard edge and a heart of gold. Her character in "She Went to Reno, " for instance.
There's a scene in the beginning of the film that's gone down in history as a true classic in the "Fast-Talking Dames"genre. Picture this: Madra, looking sleek and sassy in a striped suit and a stylish hat perched atop her head, slides through the doors of a fashionable restaurant.
She's just heard her best friend's outpouring of grief about philandering husbands and other women and quickie divorces in Reno.. Take a look at Madra's eyes as she surveys the room, eager to find someone--ANYone--to share this juicy tidbit with. Never before has black-and-white captured. Madra's flashing green eyes with such dash. Then her eyes come to rest on a corner table where. HER husband sits--with a giggling blonde! Madra's face goes from recognition to disbelief to hurt to anger in a matter of seconds. Then, setting her hat firmly on her head, she advances on the table, drums beating out a rhythm in the background--and the fun begins. From that point on, audiences witnessed one of the most fast-paced and hysterical dressing-downs ever recorded on film.
Madra, hardly stopping for breath, proceeds to recount five years of marriage in five minutes, pauses, adjusts her hat, picks up her martini glass, takes a sip--and douses her embarrassed spouse, leaving him stuttering, and the audience in stitches! We see Madra as she poses for photos for the movie poster, and then on set as she performs the scene described above.
You look great in that suit, Miss Lord! I think it might be one of my favorites on you! Said Sophie, Madra's former maid, now promoted to personal assistant and companion.
I know it makes me look great, but it's always nice to hear it. Then all actors were called to the set, and Sophie accompanied Madra to watch the exciting scene. Fancy meeting you here, Mr Brandon. And is this the lovely Mrs Brandon?
Madra said to her husband. Shake a tail feather and scram to the powder room sweetheart, I need just one moment of Mr Brandon's time. She said to the blonde who slid away as fast as she could. Darling, please don't cause a scene. Her husband, Doug said to her.
I have no problem causing a scene in this case. How could you betray me with that silly girl? And here, of all places, where you know you could run into people that know us.Don't you say a word. For once let me tell you what's on my mind.
All the years I wasted working two jobs as a boutique cashier and a waitress supporting you while you had the luxury of studying law. Well, I hope you're prepared because now, not only have you lost my trust, you've lost me. And don't try to sweet talk your way out of this -- not after all the lies I've heard just this morning.
It's high time I did something for myself and now that my eyes have been opened, I will never believe a word you say ever again. I'll see you in court, right here in Reno! Have your things out of the house by Monday when I return. Get ready for a fight because I'm gonna take you straight to the cleaners! That's when Madra threw her drink all over her screen husband..
The audience was in stitches seeing her screen husband stuttering and attempting to follow her out while wiping his suit and head with his napkin, while making excuses and apologizing profusely. But the audience has always loved Madra's performance as "the strong woman" and of course, she did not disappoint! Madra comes in her original white box and with her original doll stand bearing her name in gold, and COA.
